Are Links Important For Search Engine Rankings

The amount of quality links pointing to your website determines the popularity of your websites with many of the search engines, so it is very important to obtain quality links. However, you need to know where your website stands in the search engine rankings in order to see how much work you need to do to increase and maintain that popularity rating.

Another way to build links is through free content creation or free article submissions. When creating your website you will need to fill your site with fantastic content and make updates so other sites want to link to your site. Search engines are now smart enough to know that content is related, so, links from relevant sites are more important then links from sites which are irrelevant.

7 Secrets To Top Search Engine Rankings

There’s hope for the ‘little guys’ in the search engine ranking game, even if they can’t tell the difference between the title and keyword meta tag!

You can achieve high rankings for important keywords simply by applying certain rules that stand the test of time and even technology, the number one rule is really to., help the search engines provide relevant search results!

SEO and positioning your website to grab top positions in search engines for targeted keywords require both good on-page and off-page optimization. On-page optimization refers to how you tweak the webpage itself, ie the meta-tags, webpage title, content, navigation sitemap, etc. It has everything to do with the web architecture. Off-page optimization is more of a technique applied beyond your website, without involving any change to your website. Let’s take a look at some important elements of SEO and positioning that would boost the ranking of your website.

First of all, we need to understand a bit more about the role of on-page optimization in SEO and positioning. In summary, on-page optimization requires you to craft the web page structure such that it is optimized for a particular keyword that you are targeting.   • Subscriber Stats—If you have subscriber feeds like RSS or Atom available on your site, this will show you how many subscribers you have to those feeds.
  • What Googlebot Sees—This shows you what phrases and content are used in external links to your site. It helps if these phrases are related to the content, products and services on your site to help generate the appropriate traffic.
  • Index Stats—This tool lets you see what pages have links to your site and how your pages are indexed by Google.

  • Pages with External Links—Here you will see which pages on your website have inbound links coming from other websites.
  • Pages with Internal Links—Here you can find out which of your pages have links pointing to them from other pages on your site.

What does the internet marketers out there consider to be the sure way to make money online?

I am trying to accumulate income with Google AdSence but I have been unsuccessful in generating any income for myself. Does anyone have any suggestions the I can use to begin to generate income online I’m still trying to break though in making money online?

Many of the clients I write SEO content for make good money with Google Adsense by building niche websites, but keep in mind, they build more than one niche website. The income they earn through Adsense with more than one niche website adds up. Before building your niche websites, though, you need to find popular niches that you have knowledge about, or hire a writer with experience on that topic to write the content for you. The popular niches will be keyword phrases. Make sure the popular keyword phrases that you want to build a niche website with doesn’t have a lot of competition, and to make them work well with Adsense, they must also have a good average CPC (Cost per Click) — at least $2.00 or more.

The tool I use to build my niche websites and write content for my clients’ niche websites is the Google Adwords tool ( After you enter the keyword/keyword phrase you want to research, choose the "Show Estimated Avg. CPC" from the dropdown menu.

Finally, your niche websites need to have SEO content that includes the keyword phrase(s) you chose.

SEO Tools You Need for Website Optimization

A few basic but necessary tools for use in your SEO work

There are a number of online tools that I use in my SEO efforts.  Some of these tools are free and some cost money. I suppose you could do your SEO work without most of these tools, but who would want to?  They make life easier, and they make your SEO efforts more efficient and effective.

A good keyword tool is critically important

I have to tell you, as far as I am concerned the single most important tool in your tool kit is a keyword tool.  As I’ve said before, if your keyword phrases are not ever searched for then your search engine optimization efforts are in vain.  First you need to find out what people are searching for in regards to your topic, and then do your optimization.

There are a lot of keyword tools out there if you do a little searching. Some are free, but I use WordTracker which costs me about $60 for a month subscription. It’s an online tool, and you just log in and use it whenever you need it.  I usually end up subscribing for a month every few months.  The thing is, it is so valuable that it would be worth way more than 100 times that price.  Thank god for competition.

With WordTracker you can find out how many times a keyword phrase is searched for, how many sites are competing with you for that keyword phrase, and how many times your search engine listing would be seen per day if you were on the 1st page of the search engine results page.  It also finds keyword phrases for you in various ways.  Once you subscribe you have a wealth of information available as to how to effectively use the tool.

Google webmaster tools are invaluable in achieving a high ranking on Google.

I am a firm believer in using Google’s webmaster tools.  For crying out loud, if Google is willing to tell you what errors and problems your site has, then you should listen!  The webmaster tools tell you things like which keywords it sees in your sites content, what it sees in the link text on other sites that point to yours, which of your pages are being pointed to from other sites, and more. The tools tell you when you have duplicate title tags, not enough words in your meta description and when the meta description is duplicated on more than one page.

You can submit a sitemap to make sure all of your pages get spidered.  Sitemaps can be very simple, consisting of just a list of URLs in your site.  Google spiders your sitemap within hours of it being submitted, and it then tells you if there are any errors. It’s simply amazing.

Google Analytics is another good SEO tool

Google analytics can provide you with a wealth of information about your visitors, where they come from, and the paths through your site they take, the entry and exit pages and tons more valuable information. And it’s free. You can see at a glance your visitor bounce rate, number of visits over time, page views, and keyword phrases used to find you and so much more that I don’t have the space here to go into details.  It’s very easy to check out, so check it out.

Link Popularity Checking Tool

Marketleap has a great little tool for checking your link popularity; This tool lets you measure your website’s online awareness and overall visibility. This SEO tool helps website owners find out who is linking to their site and gives a useful benchmarking report to quickly show where you stand in comparison to competitors and other major online players. You can also track your links over time by checking every so often.  The site keeps records; some of mine now go back 4 years!

I’ll conclude with a wonderful tool I use to find out the approximate traffic that any particular web site has; You put in the URL of the site you are interested in and the tool gives you a number of statistics including the approximate traffic that the site receives. You can compare up to 5 URLs at a time and the tool gives you both numbers and graphs to view. Obviously the more traffic a site gets the more accurate the estimate.  I’ve tried several and compete gives me the most accurate figures of the ones I’ve tried.

I like to see what kind of traffic a site gets when I am considering trading links and when targeting specific keyword phrases I like to scope out the competition to see if it’s worth doing.

There are many more tools that you can find online, but this gives you a very good start, and possible all you really need to perform expert professional SEO on your webpages.

Know Your Audience
Know your audience and establish the keywords that you will target.
Find out what will interest them and what kind of search patterns they usually have.
Look at studies online for demographic information, and visit other sites, forums or communities that your target audience use.
Keyword Research
Once you have found the keywords your audience will be looking for you can find the optimal key phrases to optimise for, by using research tools such as KeywordDiscovery, Wordtracker, Google AdWords, and Yahoo Search Marketing data.
Compile lists of the most relevant phrases for your site. These will be used later on to decide the content, TITLE tags and possibly filenames of your web pages.
Grouping of the key phrases in a structured way will help to determine the architecture of your site. Look for descriptive terms like colour, size, model numbers or brand.
Choosing a Domain Name
Try not to use a new domain name. Although Google does not publicly admit that a sandboxing filter exists for new sites, for some reason, new domains can take 9 12 months to be included in the main index for any keyword phrases that are important to them.
Choose the correct TLD for your geographical location as SE’s sometimes localise searches.
Your domain name should be something short and punchy that describes the brand or product and conveys a message such as fun, music, adult or gaming.
Don’t worry about lots of keywords in the domain name. They hold little or know value with the SE’s.
Choosing a host
Make sure your host is in the audience’s geographical location as SE’s may localise their search.

Design & Content
Basic Principles
Design for the users not the SE’s in mind.
Talking naturally about the sites subject matter will identify what your keywords and phrases should be.
Write unique, quality content for your visitors. This is the most valuable way to get back links.
Take your list of key phrases and choose a few different ones for every page, ensuring that your site includes the words your audience will be searching for within it.
Structuring Your Site
Categorise your site architecture and navigation based on your keyword research. Lay out your site so that people will find the products they’re looking for. Are they looking for a price, size or a particular brand?
Your keyword research will show you that people are looking for your product in many different ways. Your job is to make sure that your site’s navigation showcases the various ways of searching. Make sure you have links to the price, size and brand pages.
Design the site with a clear hierarchy.
Try not to have folders too deep. The closer a folder or page is to the root of your site the more relevant it is.
TITLE and Meta Tags
Title tags are critical because they’re given a lot of weight with every search engine.
Your main target key phrase should be used in the TITLE tag of the home page. If your site is about Widgets then the TITLE should be something like “Get the best Widgets from the Widget Specialists”
oSub key phrases will be the names, and therefore the titles, of your sub pages i.e. “Blue Widgets” or “Large Widgets” would be sub directories or pages of “Widgets”.
The META description should be an extension (but not exact copy) of the keywords used in the TITLE tag i.e. “Get the very best in Widget design from the worlds leading online Widgets supplier. Specialising in Blue and Large widgets”
Try not to use punctuation or stop words (and, or, in, of etc.) in the TITLE tag as these are often ignored by the SE’s.
Try not to use the domain name in the TITLE as it uses up characters that could better me used for a call to action or more keywords.
Page Content
The first copy on the page should be an extension of the META description and be as close to the opening BODY tag, within the source code, as possible, without comprising the user experience.
Your keywords should appear as many times as possible on the page without it becoming nonsense for the human reader.
Your target key phrase should appear in H1 tags.
oSub key phrases on the same page should appear in H2, H3 tags and so on.
Search engines make a decision on the topic of the page based on the first 250 words. Try and make those words as relevant as possible.
Use keyword kerning. Use variations of your keywords in the body of the content. If your subject matter is “Racing” then talk about “Racing” but also “Races” you have entered and a particular “Race” you might be looking forward to.
Bold some of your keywords or phrases as this carries more weight with the search engines.
Some SEO’s believe a few keywords at the end of the page, say in a copyright statement or disclaimer, can aid the SE in determining the topic as it leaves the page. Bare in mind this must be useful to the user.
Don’t duplicate content. If all that changes on a group of pages is a few details then consider merging the information into one page.
Check your keyword density and ensure that it is approximately the same ratio as your competitors.
The content should make your site link-worthy. If your site is full of wonderful, useful information, other sites will naturally link to it without even asking and therefore increasing your rankings.
Page Graphics
Try to use text instead of images or flash where possible. Search engines don’t (this may change in the future) read the text in images or flash files.
If using AJAX make sure the initial load of the application contains the optimised elements such as TITLE and headers and is also reachable from a fixed address.
Where images are used make sure the ALT attribute of the IMAGE SRC tag is used to describe the image. Even if there is no description then ALT=”” is still necessary.
Using meaningful anchor text. Avoid non specific anchor text like “Click Here” as this tells the SE’s nothing about what is at the other end of the link.
Try and use the same keywords in the anchor text as is used in TITLE tag of landing page.
Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.
Offer a site map to your users with links that point to the important parts of your site. If the site map is larger than 100 or so links, you may want to break the site map into separate pages.
Make sure none of your links are broken.
Consider using key phrases as folder or filenames i.e. or Avoid using the underscore character or spaces as these aren’t interpreted correctly by the spiders.
Only link out to trusted sources that will be relevant and useful to your audience.
Use the TITLE attribute of the HREF tag to describe where the link is going.
If using dropdown menus or search forms to navigate provide alternative methods i.e. text links, to find the same information.
Use the REL=”NOFOLLOW” attribute of the HREF tag to prevent the crawlers from accessing irrelevant/non useful information.
Try not to have over 100 links on one page.
If using dynamic URL’s implement a URL rewrite technology such as MOD Rewrite. This will make your query strings search engine friendly and get them indexed. Parameters like “&id=” may be ignored by the likes of Google.
Check which type of URL rewriting your server and programming languages support.
If using a content management system make sure the software exports the content to HTML pages so that the SE’s can crawl them.
Use the robots.txt file to tell the crawlers which pages and directories they can access and to make sure important content isn’t being blocked.
Try not to use frames or iFrames. Keep the content on the page.
Don’t use session id’s or other tracking id’s. These appear to the crawlers as unique URL’s when in fact they point to the same page, possibly resulting in an incomplete indexing of the site or worse, penalisation for supplicate content.
URL canonical issues. Make sure your server is configured so that users and crawlers are redirected to the version of your site. Allowing users to access your site by either the or the version of your URL may result in the SE’s indexing both versions and thus penalising for duplicate content.
If you are using JavaScript consider placing it in an external .JS file.
Place your CSS in an external style sheet.
Validate your mark up language with a free validation service such as the W3C Validator.
Get back-links. The most valuable thing to get links is to write unique, quality content for your audience.
Submit to relevant, industry specific and trusted directories. Make sure all the relevant sites that should know about your site are aware that you are now online.

Submit a site map to Google Sitemaps. Google Sitemaps uses your sitemap to learn about the structure of your site and to increase their coverage of your web pages.
Consider a Pay Per Click campaign to get the ball rolling. Not only will this give your site exposure to you audience but people may link to you naturally.
Post Launch
Use tracking software such as Google Analytics or WebTrends to analyse where your traffic is coming from and which pages are receiving the most traffic.
Keep validating your mark up language to ensure it complies with W3C Recommendations and other standards.
Use a Broken Link Checker to make sure all your links a kept in tact.
If you have to move pages make sure you use the appropriate server response codes. Don’t use 302 response codes for pages that have moved as this tells the crawler that the page has only moved temporarily. Use the 301 response code instead.
Link Equity. Try not to change URL’s or titles of pages especially with deep linked pages. Historical value of a page is of great importance to the SE’s. If you have to move a page then make sure you use the appropriate redirect response code.

Failure to comply with any or all of these guidelines will significantly increase your chances of exclusion from the search engines.

Anything that can be deemed as artificial inflating rankings is known as spamming the search engines.
Design your site for your audience not the search engines. If it doesn’t help your audience then it’s probably not a good idea.
Avoid tricks. The more a ‘trick’ is discussed, the more certain you are that the search engines know about it. Be very wary of any technique that the search engines wouldn’t like, because if you can read about it, you can bet they have too. As soon as anything is more often abused than used, the search engines will stop paying attention to it and may even penalise.
Don’t participate in link exchange programmes or any PageRank purchasing schemes.
Don’t use automated software that submits to search engines, directories, forums or blogs.
Don’t steal other peoples content. Duplicate content is frowned upon by the SE’s and may get you excluded.
Don’t get links from nearly-hidden sections of websites listing hundreds or thousands of off topic sites.
Don’t link to off topic sites.
Don’t stuff your pages with either irrelevant or relevant keywords.
Don’t stuff your folder or filenames with either irrelevant or relevant keywords.
Don’t stuff your domain name with either irrelevant or relevant keywords.
Don’t use cloaking, page jacking or any other dubious redirecting methods.
Avoid “doorway” pages created just for search engines, or other “cookie cutter” approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content. If you are building an affiliate site make sure there is some original, interesting and unique content for your audience.
Don’t waste effort looking for loopholes you can exploit. Spend your time on understanding the current technologies and where they are heading.

What is Organic Search Engine Optimization? Simply put, it is designing each page to not only be pleasing for the users to read but also pleasing for the spiders. Always keep in mind that a good measure of a site’s importance is the usefulness of the information to the users.

There is no need to go to some overpriced firm to get your site ranked well in the search engines as most of theses techniques can be accomplished by anyone with a basic knowledge of HTML. Organic Search Engine Optimization will help your page rank well and drive traffic to your site without the expense of using PPC programs or placing banners all over your site as well.

There are no tricks here, just a bit of work and some time. So let’s get started by reading the following list of Organic Search Engine Optimization Techniques!

1. Domain & File Names:

Choose your site domain name that contains words from your primary keyword phrase. Your domain name should also be easy to spell and easy to remember. You can also try to use your keyword or keyword phrase as the name for the actual filename of the page you are creating as well.

2. Keyword Phrases:

Use keywords that are being searched for. You can check your keyword phrases with either the Overture Search Term Suggestion Tool or the Overture Keyword Popularity Tool to find out how often they are being searched and then incorporate these phrases into your content. You can also look at Google AdWords Keyword Suggestions for suggestions for different keyword phrases.

3. Keyword Density:

Keyword density is a very important part of search engine optimization. Keyword density is the percent that your keyword or keyword phrase are of your web page text. You may want to look that your competition to see what keyword density they are using. Too high of a keyword density will be considered search engine spam and can get you blacklisted. A good measure of keyword density is between 3 and 7 percent. Your keywords should be toward the top of your page and your keyword phrase can be in either every paragraph or every second paragraph depending on your paragraph length.

4. Bad Techniques:

Bad search engine optimization techniques can get you blacklisted from a search engine. Some techniques that are considered spam are cloaking, invisible text, tiny text, identical pages, doorway pages, refresh tags, link farms, filling comment tags with keyword phrases only, keyword phrases in the author tag, keyword density to high, mirror pages and mirror sites.

5. Title & Meta Description Tag:

Construction of your title tag is one of the most important things you need to do. Each page should have a different title with 2 or 3 of your keyword phrases at the beginning. When search engine results are displayed the title is the first thing people see. Below the title is a description which will be either be taken from your meta name description content=”Description phrase” or from the first sentence on that page. Your description should also have 2 or 3 of your keyword phrases at the beginning as should your first sentence. You should have a different title, description and first sentence on each page. You many also what to try shorter titles with only one keyword or keyword phrase as this will raise you keyword relevance.

6. Meta Keywords Tag:

The meta keywords tag is not as relevant as it used to be and some say Google doesn’t ever look at it anymore, but put it in anyway.

7. Author & Robots Tags:

The Author Tag should contain the name of the company that owns the site. This tag will help you get a #1 position for your company’s name.

Use a generic Robots Tag on all pages that you want indexed. This instructs the robots to crawl the page. The following is the generic robots tag.

8. Quality Content:

Quality content will bring people back and as people always want to tell others about a good thing it will get you forward links from other sites. Your content should be written with your keyword phrases in mind

9. Quantity Content:

The more the better. Just remember your content will need to be both quantity and quality.

10. Changing Content:

You can do this by hand or with a script. For example you can have a php script that draws five paragraphs from a pool of twenty paragraphs when the content is different each time the php page is accessed. By creating dynamic pages with a script randomly drawing different content from a database, you can get several different home pages indexed by Google and optimize for several different keyword phrases.

11. Avoid Dynamic URLs:

Are your pages served via php, asp, or cf? Some search engines may have a problem indexing them. Try to create static pages whenever possible. Avoid symbols in your URLs like the “?” that you will often find in php, asp or cf pages.

12. Frames:

Many search engines can’t follow frame links. Make sure you provide an alternative method for the search engines to enter and index your site.

13. Site Map:

A good menu system is really a site map. A well constructed menu system that is on each page and contains a link to every page on the website is all you need.

14. Site Themes:

All of the top 3 search engines look for site themes or a common topic when they crawl a website. If your site is about one specific topic you will rank better than if you have more than one theme or topic on your site. By using similar keyword phrases in each page the search engines will detect a theme this will be to your advantage.

15. Site Design:

You may think, “what does site design have to do with organic search engine optimization”? Well if your website has a bad color scheme that is hard to read, is not organized, is a cheesy looking site, then all of your site optimization has been a waste of time. Make your site attractive to the viewer, make things easy to find, have you graphic header and menu bar the same place on each page. These things will keep your visitors on the site and bring them back. A well optimized site with a high search engine results position that is ugly and is hard find information on, will not keep the visitors your optimization has brought to the site. Use W3C Link Checker to make sure all your page links are good. If you have broken links on your site this can effect the ranking you are given. Put a proper doctype on each page. If you don’t have a proper doctype on each page Internet Explorer will go into quirks mode and display it different. Use The W3C Markup Validate Service to verify that your pages are Validate HTML or XHTML code. The W3C validation will verify that your HTML or XHTML is not broken. This validation shows you any broken code that could keep your webpages from displaying properly in all the different browsers and browser versions.

16. Separate Content & Presentation:

Put all your presentation code into Cascading Styles Sheets (CSS). This separates the presentation from the content and makes your html files up to 50% smaller. It is reported that the search engine bots prefer this and the more content you have compared to presentation in your file, the better you get rated. 17. Robots.txt File:

While this file is not really required it should be included so that the search engine bots don’t get 404 errors when they look for it. Just include the following 2 lines and drop it in the root.

There are many SEO tools out there, but one of the reasons why people rank for the keyword that is in the title is because a lot of people are linking to just the URL. I register my domains with all my keywords in them because you have to do less off page optimization. If you do some SEO basic research and the keyword has practically no competition, you can rank very highly just on the domain name as well.

People tend to get fixed on one or two keyword phrases. What you want to do is pick a whole bunch of them and see which ones you can rank high for. Then you can focus in on where you are strong. If you notice that you’re in maybe say the 4th position for a keyword, and then a little bit of article marketing will be the key to boost you in the top position. Now go back to your stats and see which pages you are going strong on and build them up.
