What is the importance of a certification in ballet program to a professional dancer?
My ballet teacher says that i have to take this exam for a checetti certification for level one (its the first year this program has been started at our studio so i have to start at level 1). i’m just wondering if it will actually make a difference in trying to get into a professional company.
None whatsoever. Graded ballet is recreational ballet training. To become a professional ballet dancer you must study in a world class ballet academy. Many students dorm at their academy if they don’t live close. Often home schooled or educated in academics as arranged by their academy. They take 20-30 hours of technique classes a week and even more in the summer at summer intensives. The purpose for graded ballet is that retired professional dancers who teach at ballet academies what their retired professional teachers have handed down to them, are not available to teach in more remote areas. In order to have a minimum standard of training, they devised a way for non professional dancers to pass along training with some accountability and standard. They took non professional dancers and trained them to pass a certification so they could teach ballet to the masses. Having exams was a way to achieve some sort of standard of achievement level. On occasion, dancers with this kind of a start can go on to ballet academies for more professional training if they fit the body and facility requirements and if they audition when they are still young enough to be able to do it.
@Ballyhoo- Graded ballet is a bit different in the states than it is in the UK. Although both are still recreational ballet training, the standard in the UK is higher than in the states. At least this is what David Howard told me.

Well, it probably won’t help you get into a company but graded exams are a good way to start. They actually build a good repetoire of steps and vocabulary that make it easier to learn non syllabus work at a later stage. In teh UK, at least, most children that go into full time vocational schools will have started with graded work and indeed the vocational schools do teach a vocational exam syllabus. RAD vocational exams are not just recreational and do open doors for further study and high level competitions in teh world of classical ballet.
However, I don’t know this qualification, or your age and level, and therefore do not knwo how much help or otherwise it will be. It certainly won’t do any harm but you will need more gthan exams to get into a professional company!
