Why does my girlfriend demand that I buy her a huge diamond ring?
We were at a jewelry expo thing and after she said that the ring I give her needs to be at least 10 carats. Just because she knows I can afford it shes taking advantage of me, what should i do?
Im not trolling. Just because someone makes good money doesn’t mean they are obsessed with it. I’m definately not.
@Tiger81 I WISH i was dating Kim Kardahian.

By Liz Stanton, CPE Staff Economist
1.You’ve Been Psychologically Conditioned To Want a Diamond.
The diamond engagement ring is a 63-year-old invention of N.W.Ayer advertising agency. The De Beers diamond cartel contracted N.W.Ayer to create a demand for what are, essentially, useless hunks of rock.
2.Diamonds are Priced Well Above Their Value.
The De Beers cartel has systematically held diamond prices at levels far greater than their abundance would generate under anything even remotely resembling perfect competition. All diamonds not already under its control are bought by the cartel, and then the De Beers cartel carefully managed world diamond supply in order to keep prices steadily high.
3.Diamonds Have No Resale or Investment Value.
Any diamond that you buy or receive will indeed be yours forever: De Beers’ advertising deliberately brain-washed women not to sell; the steady price is a tool to prevent speculation in diamonds; and no dealer will buy a diamond from you. You can only sell it at a diamond purchasing center or a pawn shop where you will receive a tiny fraction of its original “value.”
4.Diamond Miners are Disproportionately Exposed to HIV/AIDS.
Many diamond mining camps enforce all-male, no-family rules. Men contract HIV/AIDS from camp sex-workers, while women married to miners have no access to employment, no income outside of their husbands and no bargaining power for negotiating safe sex, and thus are at extremely high risk of contracting HIV.
5.Open-Pit Diamond Mines Pose Environmental Threats.
Diamond mines are open pits where salts, heavy minerals, organisms, oil, and chemicals from mining equipment freely leach into ground-water, endangering people in nearby mining camps and villages, as well as downstream plants and animals.
6.Diamond Mine-Owners Violate Indigenous People’s Rights.
Diamond mines in Australia, Canada, India and many countries in Africa are situated on lands traditionally associated with indigenous peoples. Many of these communities have been displaced, while others remain, often at great cost to their health, livelihoods and traditional cultures.
7.Slave Laborers Cut and Polish Diamonds.
More than one-half of the world’s diamonds are processed in India where many of the cutters and polishers are bonded child laborers. Bonded children work to pay off the debts of their relatives, often unsuccessfully. When they reach adulthood their debt is passed on to their younger siblings or to their own children.
8.Conflict Diamonds Fund Civil Wars in Africa.
There is no reliable way to insure that your diamond was not mined or stolen by government or rebel military forces in order to finance civil conflict. Conflict diamonds are traded either for guns or for cash to pay and feed soldiers.
9.Diamond Wars are Fought Using Child Warriors.
Many diamond producing governments and rebel forces use children as soldiers, laborers in military camps, and sex slaves. Child soldiers are given drugs to overcome their fear and reluctance to participate in atrocities.
10.Small Arms Trade is Intimately Related to Diamond Smuggling.
Illicit diamonds inflame the clandestine trade of small arms. There are 500 million small arms in the world today which are used to kill 500,000 people annually, the vast majority of whom are non-combatants.

Try not being whipped. Not kidding. Her demanding, (like a child) shows how controlling she is – which will never change. She is materialistic – meaning love can be bought, in her mind.
Either put your foot down and confront her
Or take a look at what she does, how she acts and realize she is a controller
Or tell her you don’t feel she loves you for you… If you were broke she wouldn’t love you. Bring out the cold truth

Because she’s materialistic and is trying to use you to get the big diamond and show it off.

Bride to be. My ring didn’t have a diamond. It has my birthstone and I was so happy with it! 🙂
No matter how wealthy you are, the woman you marry should be just as happy with a small stone or no ring at all as she would be with a huge rock. What if in the future you lose your fortune- is she so materialistic that she’d leave you? You’re better off without a person like that to begin with. In this economy only celebrities can afford 10 ct rings, this girl doesn’t know the value of money. I think 80% of divorces are over money problems, think about it.
References :
I’d bring her back to reality by saying that diamonds are freaking expensive and it’s much nicer to spend that kind of money on a yearly holiday than one piece of jewelry. Not to mention how many robbers wouldn’t blink an eye cutting of her finger to get that rock. Tell her you will work out what makes sense financially for you but is still beautiful for her.
But maybe say it all a little nicer.

if you can afford a 10 carat ring, you are way to busy making millions to be hanging around here.

If you were an average guy, she wouldn’t be your GF. You’re the wallet in this relationship. And 10 carats is absurd, regardless of wealth.

10 kt or 10 ct????
10 kt refers to the metal setting, gold in fact. Wanting a 10kt gold setting is reasonable in fact 14 kt and 18 kt cost more.
10ct would refer to the carat weight of the gemstone…since the average weight of a diamond e-ring in the US is 1/2 ct up to 1 ct I’d say unless you are rolling in money…better run from that one.

LOL ok. Your GF doesnt know anything about jewelry! 10 Cts is huge! Playboy creator Hugh Hefner just broke up with his fiance and her ring was only 3 cts! Which means that is huge and it was expensive. So let your GF know she knows nothing about diamonds. 10 cts is bigger than the richest person, Hef, would even spend! It was 90,000 dollars for 3 cts! So 10 would be millions! Hey if Hef wouldn’t buy a 10 ct then I would say why does your GF deserve that big? Also she should fear muggers chopping off her finger for a ring that big! I would get her 1-2 cts only. Nothing bigger!
1 ct is customary for ordinary people! Only the super wealthy get bigger than 2 cts!
