Advice on learning web development?

I’m interested in learning some web design, but I’m not sure where I should focus my efforts. I’m interested in learning how to develop web applications – the kind of thing that would allow me to develop interactive applications, interact with databases, etc.

I’ve got a bit of background in programming, but it’s dated. I also have a stats/econ background, and I’m hoping to pick up enough web skills to eventually develop some niche online tools relating to statistical analysis and economics (and hopefully generate some side income from these tools).

What kind of things would I need to learn to do this (software/languages, courses, etc.) ? How much work is it to get a basic competency in these areas?

Hi,
Sounds like OLAP could be a good field for you to explore. OLAP means online analytical processing. OLAP systems usually serve large companies or organizations that have to deal with large amounts of data coming in from different sources and categories, in order to be able to produce usuful answers to complex queries on the databases. So, if this intrerests you, try to look up online terms like ‘in-memory OLAP’, ‘real time business intelligence’, ‘streaming analytics’, etc. and maybe you would find some experts on the subject who would be willing to explain the field in detail.

If you aren’t sure where (Proprietary or Open Source programming languages) you should focus your efforts then it is hard to help you.
There are all the languages(Open-Source) available for you to learn to build everything including databases and web applications assembled to work together by yourself. And then there are other languages or programming tools (Proprietary) that can help you build these faster, all you have to do is learn the language. But then you are restricted to their language and tools which may come with hefty cost.
